Thessaloniki: Raining tickets on tourist buses, taxis and cars at Macedonia airport in the summer

More than 1,300 tickets, most of them on private cars and tourist buses – 172 bus drivers had exceeded the permitted driving time, while 12 taxi drivers did not even have a special licence

Systematic and targeted checks in the arrivals and departures area of Thessaloniki’s Macedonia Airport were carried out during the last tourist season from May to September by the airport’s traffic department.

According to the data made public, a total of 1,365 offences were recorded, of which 560 were committed in tourist buses, 134 in taxis, 11 in van-type vehicles and 660 in private cars.

In the bus offences 172 were related to exceeding uninterrupted driving time, 76 were related to insufficient daily rest, 106 were related to exceeding weekly driving time, 13 were related to driving without a card and 193 were related to general driving without proper use of tachograph record sheets, improper operation of tachograph, improper use etc.

In taxis, 12 infringements concerned the expiry of a special licence, 12 related to picking up passengers outside a predetermined pick-up area, five concerned the withdrawal of an insurance policy and 105 related to general checks on compliance with the obligations arising from the operating regulations for public service vehicles.

The 11 offences in leased vans concerned the interception of transport work and of the 660 offences in private cars, 601 concerned the withdrawal of a technical inspection certificate from an MOT and 59 concerned the withdrawal of an insurance policy.

According to the Traffic Police, similar actions will continue unabated to ensure the safe movement of passengers travelling to and from the airport on a daily basis.
